The end of 15 Years long journey of Lariena
Lariena’s Transformation Journey
“In just under 6 months time, my body is more than 42 inches smaller. I have added 17 pounds of muscle and burned 40 pounds of fat, a total drop of 23 pounds on the scale.”
“This is actually the end of a very long journey for me. I’ve been battling random uncontrollable weight gain for the past 15 years. The first time it happened was in 2006. I noticed that I was gaining weight quickly. I had always been trim and able to eat as I pleased without having to worry about my weight. Plus, I’ve been a very active dancer all my life, so I was always fit and conscious of providing my body healthy fuel. And suddenly, I went from 130 to 135 lbs in a month. Over the next few months I gained more and more weight, 10 lbs, 20 lbs. Nothing changed about what I was eating, and nothing changed about how much activity I was getting. I was still eating a normal healthy amount of food and still dancing 10+ hours a week.
The only thing that stopped the weight-gain-train was slashing down to 800 calories a day. I knew that was not ok. I went to 10 doctors over 3 years trying to find out what was happening to me, but the answer was always the same… “everything looks fine. Are you getting enough exercise? Are you eating healthy foods? Taking vitamins? Maybe you’re eating more than you think.” Eventually I gave up on Drs and just resigned myself to eating 1000 measly calories a day forever.
But the weight-gain-train kept circling back around every few years. Suddenly, I’d just gain 20 pounds over 3 months for no reason at all. No changes to my food or activity. Sometimes I’d get a new Dr who would try out some medication or another that was supposed to help with PCOS or metabolic syndrome (they thought maybe that could be what was causing my problem). Sometimes the meds would stop the weight gain, sometimes cutting out all carbs could help me drop a few of the pounds I had gained. But a few years later, there I’d go again on this vicious cycle of gain 20 in 90 days and spend the next year struggling to barely lose 10.
This pattern continued for 15 years and I ultimately gained 50 pounds. The whole time I was staying active and eating healthy food. At the beginning of this year, I was back up to my previous peak weight 181. I wanted to do something about it. After 6 weeks of focusing on more plant based foods, I was down 1 lb. I switched to trying keto again… 6 weeks later, I was down 1 lb.
Having no control over the health or fitness of your body is a terrible feeling! But even worse, I was getting very worried. I got a new fitbit in January, one that measures my heart rate and gives pretty accurate calorie burn information. The new fitbit was telling me that with my intense 3 hour a day dance rehearsals 6 days a week, I was burning through 3000 calories most days. HOW WAS I EVEN STILL ALIVE??? I was only eating 1000, where were these other 2000 calories coming from?? They weren’t coming from my stored fat, I definitely wasn’t losing any weight. I decided to try a new Dr (again) because I was worried that my body might be cannibalizing my muscles/bones/organs to get those other 2000 calories.
The fancy technology at the Drs office confirmed that I did in fact need to lose 30 lbs of fat, I do burn 3000 calories most days, and once again everything is “fine” with me… I’m perfectly healthy & normal, but I did have far too much visceral fat, the kind that is deep inside around my organs and is very dangerous. The Dr suggested going to the dietitian and getting on their medically supervised weight loss plan. Being a celiac, I am not able to do most of these processed diet food plans. Besides, I’ve been there & done that “Eat 1200 calories a day of these processed, garbage, chemical filled, overpriced lean cuisines until you’ve starved down to your goal weight.” I had already paid a dietitian $60 per visit to give me outdated nutrition advice and sell me $400 a month protein shakes. And I already knew that route does not work because I had already tried it (a few times).
It was heartbreaking to be told YET again, that there’s nothing wrong with me that some medical grade slimfast couldn’t cure. The new Dr was just another dead end. I was desperately looking for something that might help when my mom found KaiserFit and told me to check it out. Coach Shane’s story sounded so much like mine. I thought I was doing everything right; getting lots of activity in, eating healthy, nutritious foods in very restricted portions. I decided to check out what Coach Shane had to say.“
“Yes, I’ve been trying to lose weight for 15 years, and as I mentioned my only results were gaining 50 pounds. I have tried everything you can think of to manage my weight. I’ve tried plant based, lazy keto, hard core keto, juice cleanses, liver cleanses, intermittent fasting, 3 and 5 day fasting, cabbage soup, bean soup, meal plans from muscley body builders, meal plans from tiny yoga ladies, all organic/natural, supervised plans, shake plans, vitamin/supplement plans… I think the only thing I never tried was that plan where you only eat a hot dog and 2 saltines as a meal, and I probably would have tried that too if I could eat saltines!”
“The biggest difference I noticed immediately was that there’s no scheme! Nothing sketchy, no starving, no avoiding certain foods for the rest of your life, no exotic secret weightloss herb. I felt like everything Coach Shane said was healthy and nutritionally sound.”
“I have food allergies and I am a celiac; so I’ve been gluten free for 13 years. I can’t eat wheat or most processed food and very rarely eat fast food (only because it’s not safe for me). I needed a plan that would let me eat the foods that are safe for me. On this program, I have been able to eat all the same safe foods that I was eating before; chicken, fish, steak, fruits, vegetables, nuts, cheese, even my favorite chocolate and wine!”
My typical day starts with a protein latte and a bowl of overnight oats with peaches. I nibble some fruit for a midmorning snack, plums and cherries are my favorite.
In this summer heat, I am very into mixing Coach Shane’s juice recipe with a can of fizzy water for a refreshing drink. In the afternoons, I snack on some almonds or an apple with peanut butter.
For lunch, I usually have a sandwich or lettuce wrap with deli turkey, cheese, mayo, tomatoes with a side dish of shredded carrot salad, or maybe some leftovers from yesterday’s dinner.
Dinner is usually chicken or fish on the grill with mushrooms and zucchini or okra or green beans, sometimes a baked potato. For my evening snack, I have a dessert protein bar (my current fave is a chocolate covered donut bar).
“And I usually have enough calories left for some gummy bears or chocolate and a glass of wind-down-wine.”
“I don’t consider myself ever having had a cheat day or a cheat meal. On this plan, I have never had to deprive myself of anything that I want. Also, I try not to think about food in terms of good/bad or cheating/faithful, it’s too easy for me to get into disordered feelings about food if I think that way. I try to only think about food as medicine. So food is either nutritious, or it is not-so-nutritious. I did have one day a while back where I got to visit with a friend from out of town, we had a lovely afternoon of socially distanced catching up on a sunny patio. We shared a few pitchers of frose` and after that I ate a cheeseburger and French fries and fell asleep on the couch at 8pm. I went 500 calories over, came up 7000 steps short, and only got half of my protein goal for the day. I would definitely say that my choices were not-so-nutritious that day LOL. But my carefree day did not slow down my progress at all, I still stayed on track for the week.”
“I have been in the fat loss phase for 17 weeks. I have gained 17 pounds of muscle and burned 37 pounds of fat, for a total scale change of 20 pounds so far.”
“I have always been dedicated to keeping my body healthy and strong enough to keep dancing. My love for dancing and my desire to be strong & healthy were where my original motivation came from. My ongoing daily motivation comes from seeing and feeling my results every day. It finally feels really good to be in my body again. I am happy with the way I look and I have so much more energy and strength now.”
“My body is a fat burning machine!!!”
“Before the pandemic, my typical exercise was 15 -20 hours a week of dance rehearsal and dance classes. But we went into lockdown in the middle of my KaiserFit calorie testing. All of my typical exercise disappeared before I even started the fat loss phase. These past 17 weeks that I’ve been in fat loss and on lockdown, my exercise has been 100% walking. Right now I am doing 10,000 steps a day and it’s currently over 100 degrees outside, so I have been doing a lot of walking around the house and marching in place while I watch TV.”
“I only take the regular vitamins that my holistic chiropractor suggests for me, which I’ve been taking for a few years now. Pretty standard stuff; magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin D, melatonin, some herbs for stress, and Nighty Night Tea.”
